I just wanted to hop on and let you know a little bit about what’s going on in my world. The last couple days have been CRAZY. Trav and I have been working nonstop running errands, getting doctors’ appointments in (yes, we’d like clean teeth on the boat), buying last-minute items, and mostly… packing. The hardest part is that we still have yet to see the boat, or even have been in Grenada, so we are unsure how much space we will have, what kind of linens/blankets we should bring, and also what the weather will even be like! Yes, I tried to bring all 14 pairs of shoes that I own but Travis shot that one down.
Here’s a couple of “heads ups” you might want to take into account if you ever find yourself visiting us or doing something like this on your own…
First of all, look into vaccines early. Luckily the Caribbean is pretty safe and clean, so only a few diseases/sicknesses were of real concern. In Utah, you need to go through the State Travel Clinic, which requires an appointment to get the shots or pills that you need. In addition to that, some also require multiple visits to get the entire course of treatment. If you are planning a trip, it’s good to start looking into this around 6 months in advance! Also- check to make sure you are up-to-date on all of the regular US vaccines
Next, figure out not only how many bags you are taking, but also how much they weigh. We have decided to check four bags and have two carry-ons. The issue we found was not with having enough space, but we are worried about the weight. Our bags are to be less than 50 pounds each, which sounds like a lot, until my clothes alone weighed 30 pounds! Since we are literally moving our entire lives onto Sommer Wind, we need to pack tools, scuba gear, pots and pans, sheets, etc. Obviously some items can be purchased abroad, but we want to come prepared just in case. Depending on where you’re going or for how long, you should be fine, just be aware of weight and prices when moving/visiting a country for an extended period of time!
Lastly, plan ahead. I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but seriously. We have been talking about this trip for years and we still felt like we barely had enough time to do everything that we needed to. If you know you need to clean out your car before you go- do it the week before. If you know you need to order that last swimsuit before your trip- do it while you can get free shipping. Don’t put it off until “later” because pretty soon you’ll have a list of 20 “laters” and that gets overwhelming during the last couple days before your trip. This should be a fun time so try to have as little stress as possible.
We’ll keep you updated with more as soon as we get down there!
PS- I’ll let you know if all of my 14 pairs of shoes made the cut
Bon voyage!
